While landlords insure buildings against loss, they do not traditionally cover the loss of your belongings. Rental insurance plans are inexpensive and easy to get so there is no excuse!
Rental insurance plans usually cover either actual cash value or replacement costs, but regardless of which plan you choose, it is a good idea to keep an inventory list of the items that you have in your apartment. You can store this inventory list outside of your apartment or in a fire-proof box. In addition, many policies include liability insurance and compensation if you are forced from your apartment for a few nights.
