Types of Roofing Materials

What are the different types of roofing materials?

If you are replacing or repairing your Cincinnati roof, you will need to decide which kind of roofing to use. These are some of the widely used types of roofing materials.

Asphalt Shingles

This is the most common type of roofing material for homes. Asphalt shingles, also known as composition shingles, are made with an organic or fiber glass core. They are secured with an adhesive backing and are also tacked or nailed. When buying asphalt shingles, you will find them in grades of good, better and best. Compare costs and warranties to find the right asphalt shingles for your home.

Corrugated Sheet

These sheets are made from fiber and asphalt and come in a variety of different colors. This is the easiest type of roofing to install if you are doing it yourself.

Wood

Wood roofing, oftentimes made from cedar, comes in two types - shingles and shakes. Shingles are specified sizes and have a smooth finish. Shakes are varying in size and rough in texture. Wood roofing is more difficult to install and more expensive than asphalt shingles.

Metal

Metal roofs reflect heat and are relatively maintenance-free. The metal comes in sheets and is easy to install. Metal roofing was popular in the 1970s and has now resurfaced as a common roofing option.

Tile and Slate

Tile and slate both look good and are very durable. Because of their heavy weight, you must have a reinforced roof that can support them. Both tile and slate are very expensive and difficult to install. Use a professional to install a new tile or slate roof.
